Ground Breaking Ceremony Held at the Site of the Michelle Lynn Cox Cheer and Dance Complex.

Altus Public School officials and members of Michelle Lynn Cox’s family met Thursday, June 30, 2022 for a ground breaking ceremony at the construction site of the Michelle Lynn Cox Cheer and Dance Complex.  The complex will be located east of Hightower Memorial Stadium and will be home to Altus High School’s Cheer, Pom, and Archery teams.

Michelle attended Roosevelt Elementary, Southeast Junior High, and Altus High School.  She was cheerleader at each school she attended. Michelle was a proud member of the Class of 1982.  She returned to Altus Schools after earning her teaching degree, teaching 7th Grade Pre-Algebra at Southeast Junior High, Altus Middle School and Altus Junior High.  Michelle was a cheer coach for 17 of her 30-year career.  She retired as an assistant principal in 2018. Michelle lost her battle with breast cancer in September of 2018.

“Michelle always tried to convince us (her three brothers) that cheerleading was a real sport,” said her brother Phillip Cox.

She was always so proud of the Altus cheerleaders, now they will have a facility to be proud of!
